Description

UN Women is the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. It was established in July 2010 by decision of the UN General Assembly, which merged four previously separate UN programs and offices working on gender issues into a single body.

Its work is organized around four main pillars: women's leadership and political participation, economic empowerment, freedom from violence, and women's role in peace, security and humanitarian action. It also serves as the secretariat for the Commission on the Status of Women and coordinates gender equality efforts across the wider UN system.

UN Women partners with governments, civil society and the private sector in countries around the world, supporting legal and institutional reforms, programs that expand access to services, and shifts in social norms aimed at closing gender gaps in education, health, employment and decision-making.
